However did you know that the power of networking can be increased by ten folds? Social media websites have changed peoples views on job hunts. Recently, more people have become aware of the potential of these sites to increase the chances of a job seeker to land a job. But as a modern man, have you ever notice the importance of social media networking on your job search?

Due to the emergence of the Internet, job hunting has been completely revolutionized. In fact, it is quite unacceptable to ignore this emerging trend. As a job seeker, you should be flexible and be creative as much as you can. To gain an edge over your competitors, you must take advantages of social media sites before your competitors do. However, what are social networking sites and how do they work?

Social networking sites are websites that use social networking tools to attract online users. When you say social networking, it refers to the interaction or communication between people within specific groups such as friends, family, workmates and classmates. Hence, in a social media site, people share information to each other either in personal or professional level, or both. With this definition alone, Twitter itself is not proclaiming to be a social networking site. But still, the site is highly recommended for building up your network. So, how can you effectively benefit from these sites?

•	Personal Branding – honestly, these sites strengthen your personal brand. You might know by now that personal branding is very important in a job hunt. However, it is not a new phenomenon. From the day you are born, you are already branding and marketing yourself. As a social being, it is natural to live your life based on other people’s view on you. Even if you do not admit it, you are living your life to the expectation of others.

•	Profile Pitching – technically speaking, your profile on your social media accounts is your elevator pitch. It should be able to make a lasting impression of you in only ten seconds. Your opportunity on social media lies in you. What you represent will determine what opportunity will open up for you.

•	Update Your Profile Picture – as they say, photos speak a thousand words. You do not want your potential employer to see your weird side. To capture people’s attention more, upload a photo with you smiling in it. Smile using your eyes and your lips. This is considered a true smile. Also, ensure that the photo is up to date. As you may have notice, your profiles in your social media accounts act the same way as your CV.

•	Build a Positive Image – in social media sites, you can easily slip and ruin your reputation. The articles you submitted, the comments you posted and the pictures you uploaded will define who you are. They will influence the image you want to emit either in a positive on negative way. Hence, start your messages with a statement that will help in defining who you are. If you can, include your passions and ambitions in them.

Basically, you can utilize social media websites such Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn as your online business cards. This way you can widen your online presence.

Online job search is quite common these days. In this digital age when everything is going online, the employers, recruiters and job seekers have chosen online platforms to interact with each other.

Internet offers a flexible, dynamic and 24×7-live environment. Finding job online is easy and it saves time as well. In this article I would discuss 5 most used and helpful job searching platforms of the internet.

Use Search Engines:

Search engines are the source of information on the internet for many. You put your query in the search box and search engines fetch few relevant web pages from millions. Use the power of search engines to find a job online.

In your search string, include the industry name, your career skills and add the term ‘jobs’ at the end. Try different combination of the search phrases to reach to new sites. Use local search engines, or include the name of your city in the search term to get information about local job openings.

Assume you are looking for a career in journalism; search for journalism jobs. And if you are looking for openings in California, modify your search term to make it “journalism jobs California”.

Visit Employers’ Websites:

If you know who the biggies in your target industry are, just go to their websites and explore the career opportunities with them.

Most companies maintain a section on websites wherein they display current job openings along with job responsibilities. Just check if your profile suits with the requirements; if it does, then express interest. Follow the instructions given on the website.

In case they ask you to send resume, follow resume writing guidelines to prepare your resume. Do not forget to attach a cover letter.

Hit Job Portals:

Visit job search engines, job listing websites, job boards and job banks to check if there is any suitable vacancy for you. Job providers, employers, HR managers and recruiters frequent these boards to post jobs online. Hence these are the good places to find a job in any industry.

Some of the job portals allow job seekers to upload their resume so that they can get offers from employers directly. Upload your resume and subscribe to the newsletters of these job portals to stay informed.

Also, look for some good career advice and career education sites to learn about the industry buzz and modern developments.

Join Social Networks for Professionals:

Online social networks are in the pulse of the day. Join these networks, specify your interests and network with entrepreneurs and recruiters.

There are social networks meant for professionals. Join these communities and keep a close eye on vacancy and current opening section.

Browse Classifieds – Help Wanted Columns

Surf online classified ads and ad listing websites. Visit the help wanted, situation vacant columns for suitable offers. Join their mailing list, if any, to stay informed about latest job openings.

You can follow any or all of the above mentioned online job search methods. Online job searching is the easiest way to find permanent, temporary, freelance or home based jobs in any industry!

Here, we will provide you with resume writing tips to help you build your resume in a way that will lead you to your dream job. Writing professional resumes is not rocket science; however, it is also not a kid’s play. While writing your resume, you need to bear in mind certain pointers that would help you create an executive resume. Following are certain resume writing tips to help you build your resume:

When you are writing certain long sentences in the resume, make sure you are not ending up with a lengthy paragraph. Use bullet points that make the document easier to read

Use a positive tone all throughout the resume and cover letter. Depressed and negative tone will not win you an interview

Pay attention to the type of language you are using. Try to sound professional. Avoid using slang, jargon and flowery language.

Make sure your resume format is suitable to your line of work. It should not be too crazy or too boring in any case.

Make sure there are no mistakes present in the resume. spelling, grammatical and typographical mistakes are some common ones, and you must make sure you are following standard English rules and not committing these mistakes

Use active voice and strong, effective action words like “organized”, “managed”, etc. in the resume. You can find more words online

Use proper salutation and never make any mistakes with the name of your intended employer

Check out a few resume samples online for your specific field in order to get an idea as to which type of resume format is best for you, and what all character traits and personal information you should add on your resume

Keep yourself in the reader’s shoes. Ask yourself if you are finding your resume easy-to-understand and impressive, supposing yourself as the employer. Ask yourself questions based on your resume

If you are a resher, and you have good CGPA, you can flaunt it, but suppose you have substantial work experience and your graduation grades are not very impressive, you do not need to put them in your resume

Mention your complete personal details in the resume. Do not miss out on any vital information and make sure your contact details are all mentioned correctly and will be the same for a long time
These are some of the resume writing tips to help you build your resume effectively. This complete resume guide in itself will lead you to your successful resume. Similarly, following these rules meticulously will in turn lead you to your dream job for which you have applied with this resume.

Ronald Reagan once said: “A recession is when your friend loses their job. A depression is when you lose yours.”

We’re hovering on the edge of a recession and having well honed job hunting skills is something which is increasingly important for American and European workers.

Just out of interest – Americans get frantic about a possible recession when the unemployment rate goes over 5%. However, in many European countries, the normal unemployment rate is closer to 10% – this is largely due to different measurement standards and a higher percentage of people receiving government assistance. On the other hand, it is a lot harder to fire someone in most European countries.

Our first piece of job search advice is to examine your monthly income versus your expenses and also to look at the rate at which you will go through your savings if you become unemployed.

Obviously, the longer that you can afford to spend looking for a job before you burn through your saving, the better off you will be in the long run. While you look for work, you may be able to do freelance work, if this is applicable to your field. In fact, in some fields, such as copywriting, editing and programming, you can make a good income on the side this way.

Our next piece of job search advice is to get all of your ducks in a row when it comes to job hunting. Get your resume or CV into shape and come up with cover letters which explain exactly why you are the best candidate for the position. After any interview, send a thank you note – write one at the same time as you write your cover letter and prepare it for mailing in case you land an interview. Take it with you and mail it on your way home from the interview.

Get organized with your job search. Make good notes of your activity so you don’t duplicate your efforts or forget things.

You also have to be prepared to put in the effort required to find a new job. You’ll be making a large number of phone calls and sending out a lot of resumes each week. You’ll also have to spend plenty of time following up on all of these calls and resumes. Remember that volume is the name of the game here. Don’t make the mistake of focusing on just one job and feeling down if you don’t get it.

You’ll have to be flexible enough to accept temp-to-hire positions or if necessary, work through a temporary agency or staffing company. You may have to relocate – look at the positives of the situation.

If things are slow, then think about enhancing your skills by getting additional certifications, taking classes or getting any additional training needed to get a leg up in the job market.

Last of all, keep an eye out for jobs which are both publicly posted and non-posted. Remember that even in good economic times, less than 20% of jobs are publicly posted. Talk to people and ask them about positions which are not advertised. You can safely assume that any job which is posted online is being deluged with applicants.

When you’re actively job searching online, it’s very important to be organized. How many of you have applied at the same company twice without realizing you already did? How about a company contacting you weeks or months later and offering you a position you couldn’t remember applying for? Have you forgotten or lost the employer’s name and contact information? This wouldn’t have happened if you kept proper track of your job searches.

There are several systems you can use to manage and stay organized during your job searching online. Many use spreadsheets created in Excel; use Word or a notebook with handwritten notes which can become messy, unreadable and time consuming. If these are your choices make sure you keep adequate information on them and keep them updated.

First, have all versions of your resumes, cover letters and follow up letters organized in a folder on your computer and have them backed up on a CD, external hard drive or on a web backup system like Mozy.com. You may have to make several folders and sub folders to keep track of all job posting ads from the different companies. It’ll be easier if you had sub folders labeled with the job position details you applied for. For example customer service, article writer and so on. You can copy and paste the job description on Notepad and use this as a reference or reminder of what the job entailed. This is especially helpful when the company takes weeks or months to get back to you.

Other information necessary to be inputted into your spreadsheet are as follows and you can tweak it to suit your needs.

* Contact info – Company’s name, contact person’s name, email, fax, phone number, physical location, website, social networks
* Date
* Job title and reference number
* Deadline
* Action – Follow up letter, include date sent
* Names and titles of people you spoke with, person who interviewed you
* Feedback you’ve received, experience you had in the interview, anything that was different
* Duration – How long it took for a company to respond to you, whether you got an autoresponder message etc.

It’s also important to manage the people you have networked with online and offline. Excel may not be comprehensive enough to meet your growing job searching needs and a good, free web database to use is JibberJobber.com. This system is much more feature rich and powerful than Excel where you can keep track together of all the information, status, action, follow up etc. for each company/position you applied for.

Using a web data base is also safer as it’s not on your computer so you won’t accidentally lose your information.

How you manage and organize your job searching online is essential in obtaining a job. Job hunting can be overwhelming, but being organized will create less work for you and let you focus on networking, researching, applying and finding your ideal job.

How many people do you know that the first job they applied for they got hired? Maybe as a teenager, a neighbor had a business and you applied over the back fence and got hired. In the real world rarely are job searches simple and they surely are not fast.

Job hunting is continued effort over a period of time before you achieve success. Along the way you’ll have rejections, go through a number of interviews, continual research and learning, and change and expand your approach several times.

Knowing what you a getting into to and how job hunting works; will reduce stress and allow you to retain a more positive attitude. There are plenty of jobs out there. You also have a large number of choices. The right job opportunity is right around the corner, patience and diligence will make it happen.

As you start your job hunting journey one thing is clear. The easier it is to apply for a job, the more difficult it will be for you to stand out. For example, if you can send your resume out 500 times on an online job board with only a click of your mouse, what do you think a few thousand others are doing? It means you’ll be competing with a thousand or more other job hunters who are doing exactly what you are doing. Not a good plan to find the right job.

In talking to your friends and relatives ask them how they found their jobs. The majority will tell you they found their jobs through someone they knew, or from a friend of a friend or someone’s recommendation. Copy this approach and you’ll be well on your way to find a job. Networking works every time it’s tried.

Spend some time every day learning how to be better at networking. Ask for referrals and help others whenever possible. Learn how to work a networking event to your advantage. Keep up your networking activities after you find a job. You never know when your network will uncover a better opportunity.

Not only do you need to keep a positive attitude during your job hunting but you need to understand, although you need a job the prospective employer has equal or greater needs. They have a job to fill, challenges to be overcome, and customers to be taken care of. Your marketing effort is to convince the employer that hiring you will solve his problem and, if you really focus your job hunting strategy, provide him with additional benefits.

There is no magic bullet in job hunting. Nothing by itself will guarantee job search success. A perfectly written and powerful resume will not guarantee you’ll get the job. You award-winning performance in the job interview will not assure success. What you will learn is that the most qualified candidate will not always get the job.

The hiring manager has a variety of motives in making the hiring decision. Sometimes there are internal political considerations that come into play. Maybe the winning candidate went to the right school. Or an employer you worked for, did something negative to a member of the hiring managers family. Maybe it’s a feeling another candidate would work better with the existing team. Often it’s a decision that the other candidate was more likable and would be more fun to work with.

Bottom line, smile a lot in the job interview, tell positive stories of your accomplishments that closely match the employer’s needs, never bad mouth anybody, and express a keen interest in the position. If the hiring manager has a strong assurance that you are positive and likable you will, more often than not, be the one hired over the other candidates.

But when you are unemployed you are facing stressful situations like job searching. Here are three tips that can help:

1) As like anything in life job hunting is no different. Approach finding a job like it was a full time job. If it means waking up early as if you already had a job and get out there and hunt, hunt, hunt until you find something. Go to all the job and career centers in your area.. If you treat it like a part-time job it will take longer.

2) Set goals for yourself. Treat it like a project. You should apply all the skills you learn’t in your last job to attack the present endeavour.

3) It’s all about being your own boss. Set targets and expectations for what you want to accomplish. Once a week meet up with yourself to see how much you have accomplished in terms of goals. Then plan steps to take and achieve for the next week. Write reports, one for the previous week and one for the up coming week. Compare these reports on what you wanted to have.

For example, you could set goals in the report, of the number people or businesses to call. Also the number of networking meetings to attend and the research you will conduct. In the weeks to come compare the results that you obtained the weeks prior. For example if you planned to attend 5 networking meetings and you only attended 2. Find out where you went wrong and write down in your next report steps you will take to not make the same mistakes again and make sure you hit your goal.

I am an owner of a job search website and these are the praises and the complaints I get, on my job search website.

I am going to start out with the benefits of job search websites. The most praised comments that I get for my site, is how many more job that are posted than their local newspaper or local job boards. There is a reason for this, job search websites get their job posting from newspapers, job boards, and from employers who post job positions on the website itself. So what is boils down to is all jobs available at on source.

The next benefit for job search websites is their convenience. You can sit at home, library, or even at an internet cafe and search for jobs all day long. This saves time and money, which is a necessity for most people who are looking for a job. The cost in gas money from just driving around looking for help wanted signs in windows and searching for job boards can add up quick when gas in $3.50 a gallon.

Another great thing to be considered is when looking for a job online, once you have found a job you want, you can apply for that job right then and there by either filling out an online job application or by simply uploading your resume to the employer who is doing the hiring. The great thing about this is you can apply for tens even hundreds of jobs a day, increasing your chances of landing a job that you so desire. Finding the perfect job can increase you production and happiness as an employee. You know what they say a person who loves what they do hasn’t worked a day in their life.

Now for the con’s the first one that I get the most from is not actually the job seekers, it is from the employers who has posted the job on my site. The problem they run into is that they get overloaded with resumes and applications. In one instant I had a person from HR who posted a job on the site called me complaining that she had over 3000 people apply for the job within 8 hrs of posting the job on my site. She said she was going to have to go through every one of these resumes to find the right candidate for the job and it had only been a few hours. Plus most of the people that had applied didn’t even fit the requirements that had been posted. So if you are an employer I will help you out with the solution to this problem. There is software out there for your computer that will sort through people who are not qualified for the position that you have posted. I am not particular towards one or the other so you can make your choice by searching Google for the software.

The next problem with job search websites is the competition that you are up against. With thousands of people going for the same job you have to make sure that your resume stands out above all others. One of the biggest complaints from Human Resource that i get is that no one uses a cover letter on their resumes. This can be a big difference when weeding out people who have applied for the same job as you have.

The other problems that I have is with job search website that charge you a fee or membership to look or apply for a job you find on their site. Some sites are totally free sites that don’t charge you at all for there services. In my opinion this should be free, the people whom are looking for a job probably doesn’t have money to be paying a monthly fee just to look for a job. I make money on my site by the employer posting an open position on my site. The employer also likes this because I charge less than the newspapers for the this service and they get twice as many views.

I hoped you have learned something from this and I hope this will give you an informed decision on the best way for you to search for a job.

Our job tip this week is about the changing landscape today’s job search. Not too long ago an hour or two spent looking at one of the big online job search sites would probably yield several matching openings. Unfortunately, for most of us, those days are past. With a struggling economy and an uncertain economic future, employers are wary about hiring. Today’s job seekers need to put more time and effort to find their next job.

So job searches are tougher – but not impossible. Thousands of people get interviews and get hired every day. Additional work, organization, and drive can put you in the same place. Let’s face it – a quality job search should take some effort!

One of the first things you can do is to broaden your searching. Don’t just check Monster or Careerbuilder every morning – look farther. There are many (many) online websites that exist to help you find a job. Most of them are available for free – you just need to find and use them. Include any major and regional newspapers in your search. Newspapers today often have online search capabilities like many of the big job boards. and may have local information like job fairs and career counseling.

Social Networking sites can be a huge advantage in a job search. Letting folks you know (or used to know) that you’re looking is a great step in getting the word out. There are also sites like LinkedIn that can help you reconnect with past co-workers or bosses who know exactly the type or work you like and that you’re good at. These are often the connections that can help land that next job.

Many times just having a routine to go through can help organize and broaden your search. Build up your search websites and contacts and keep revisiting them over and over again. A daily routine can also help keep you spirits up because there’s work that you have planned to do each day and every day to find a job, rather than having no plan and a random search. Don’t get discouraged if many times the answer is ‘No’, it only needs to be;Yes’ once.

The main positive impact of a quality, comprehensive search is that you’ll learn what types of jobs are available and likely see a greater variety of opening and employers. By investigating these you’ll probably learn more about what type or work you want to do and where are good places to do it.

So remember, putting more effort into your job search isn’t just a good idea, it’s almost become a necessity. The upside is that by doing quality research you’ll likely find many alternatives and be able to find the best matching job for you. Good Luck!
